Highlights
Bardedjilidji Walk is one of Kakadu National Park's most interesting short walks. The 2.5 kilometre trail winds through layered sandstone, woodlands and wetlands alongside the East Alligator River. You can complete it by yourself or join the guided walk on Mondays.
Bardedjilidji is the local Aboriginal word for walking track or pathway, and also refers to the roots of waterlilies growing in freshwater swamps and billabongs. Experience a number of different habitats on the trail, from sandstone formations that were islands in the sea in at the time of the dinosaurs, to monsoon vine forest and wetland areas. Look for the black wallaroo in the early morning among the shaded sandstone outcrops. Stop at the cave that provides daytime shelter for insects, geckos and bats, and which once would have been a cool shelter for Aboriginal people. Look carefully to see some rock art here, but please do not touch/rub the paintings.
Enquire with the Bowali Visitor Centre about accessibility - the track is subject to weather conditions and guides' availability. Allow two hours for this easy to moderate walk, which starts at a small car park 500 metres from the upstream boat ramp on the East Alligator River.

Guidelines
- Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for up to date information on the current conditions. Ensure to check for any updates relating to any warnings that may be issued for the area, and check for the opening and closing times.
- Ensure you observe all safety signs, and be aware that whenever you are near water in the park, there is a risk of crocs! Kakadu has Crocodile Management Zones to minimise risk to humans. Even in these zones you should be cautious. Crocodile warning signs and Crocodile Management Zones are not found everywhere.
- Wear suitable footwear and always ensure to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements when exploring the Northern Territory.
- Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food and water for your journey.
- Always stay on the marked tracks where possible. Never climb fences, they are there for your own safety.
- Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you or place in the bins provided. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
