Overview

Highlights

Southern Rockhole is located on the Windolf bush walking track. It is roughly an 8km return bush walk from the car park. You will be amazed by the beauty of the landscape on this walk, and when you arrive at Southern Rockhole you will be taken in by the waterfall and the escarpment's sandstone rock, absolutely stunning, magnificent.

The Southern Rockhole is a seasonal waterfall, located near the top of the first gorge. This Rockhole is 4km (each way) by foot, or alternatively you can catch a ferry. Boat ferries are available either one-way (with the option of walking one way), or return. The boat ferry will take you within 150m of the Rockhole, you are then required to walk the remainder of the way.

The walk is not a man-made path, and is rock-hopping the majority of the way in. As such, a moderate level of fitness and mobility is required.

Swimming is only permitted when the Rockhole has been opened by Parks and Wildlife Services.

Important Information

Guidelines

  • Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for up to date information on the current conditions. Ensure to check for any updates relating to any warnings that may be issued for the area, and check for the opening and closing times.
  • Ensure you observe all safety signs, and be aware that whenever you are near water in the NT, there is a risk of crocs! Crocodile warning signs and Crocodile Management Zones are not found everywhere.
  • Always enjoy waterfalls from trails and marked viewing points. Do not climb over barriers as cliff edges and slippery surfaces may cause injury or death.
  • Only swim where permitted. Don’t jump from cliff edges into water bodies.
  • Swimming near or under waterfalls can be dangerous due to strong currents, submerged hidden rock ledges and other dangers. The force of a waterfall can be incredibly strong and unfortunately, many people have drowned. Follow warning signs and take caution.
  • Wear suitable footwear and always ensure to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements when exploring the Northern Territory.
  • Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food and water for your journey.
  • Always stay on the marked tracks where possible. Never climb fences, they are there for your own safety.
  • Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you or place in the bins provided. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
  • Fees may apply. See parks website for more details.
  • Do not feed the wildlife.
  • Leave nothing but footprints. Take nothing but memories.
